Galaxy Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

There is a fairly new yarn from Red Heart, Red Heart Boutique Gleam, and I had the chance to work with it! My full yarn review comes later this week but I wanted to give you a sneak peak of a free cowl design using Gleam. It even only takes 1 skein! Galaxy Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

Yarn  

Red Heart Gleam worsted weight yarn (50 g/105 yds):  1 skein Indigo

Materials 

US Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, yarn needle, scissors

Difficulty

Easy

Size/Measurements  

32” Circumference, 7” tall

Gauge

Not critical for this pattern.

Special Stitches 

fhdc (foundation half double crochet) = ch 2, yo and insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 1 loop on hook (1st ch made), yo and pull through all loops on hook (hdc made), *yo and insert hook into ch of previous foundation stitch, yo and pull up loop, yo and pull through 1 loop on hook (ch made), yo and pull through all loops on hook (hdc made); repeat from * until desired number of fhdc have been made.

2-tr cluster (2-treble cluster) = *yo twice and insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a loop,  [yo and pull through 2 loops] 3 times; repeat from * once more, yo and pull through all loops on hook.

2-dc cluster (2-double crochet cluster) = *yo and insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, [yo and pull through 2 loops] 2 times; repeat from * once more, yo and pull through all loops on hook.

Notes 

  1. Beginning ch-1 does not count as a st.
  2. Pattern is worked in rounds.
  3. For a taller Cowl, repeat Rounds 3-6 as  desired, ending on a repeat of Round 4 or 6. This will require an additional skein of yarn.

Online Crochet Class
Instructions:

Round 1:  Fhdc 120, sl st to 1st hdc to join—120 sts.

Round 2:  Ch 1, sc in same, *skip 3 (2-tr cluster, ch 2, 2-dc cluster, ch 2, 2-tr cluster) in next, skip 3**, sc in next; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sl st to 1st sc to join—15 cluster groups.

Round 3:  Ch 6 (counts as dc, ch-3 here and throughout), *sc in 2-dc cluster, ch 3**, dc in next sc, ch-3; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-6 to join—30 ch-3 spaces.

Round 4:  Ch 3, dc in same (counts as 2-dc cluster), ch 2, 2-tr cluster in same, sc in next sc, *(2-tr cluster, ch 2, 2-dc cluster, ch 2, 2-tr cluster) in next dc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around, 2-tr cluster in same st as beginning ch-3, ch 2, sl st to 1st dc to join—15 cluster groups.

Round 5:  Ch 1, sc in same, ch 3, *dc in next sc, ch-3**, sc in 2-dc cluster, ch 3; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sl st to 1st sc to join—30 ch-3 spaces.

Round 6:  Ch 1, sc in same, *(2-tr cluster, ch 2, 2-dc cluster, ch 2, 2-tr cluster) in next dc**, sc in next; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sl st to 1st sc to join—15 cluster groups.

Rounds 7-12:  Repeat Rounds 3-6, ending with a Round 4 repeat.

Round 13:  Ch 1, *sc in 2-dc cluster, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space; repeat from * around, sl st to 1st sc to join—90 sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Attach yarn to 1st fhdc, ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to 1st sc to join—120 sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
